In 1865: Abraham Lincoln Funeral Service held here. His train reached the Columbus Depot at exactly 7:30 in the morning. The hearse was drawn by six white horses covered with black cloth. An arch over the Capitol’s Western Entrance read “OHIO MOURNS”. More than 50,000 people viewed the assassinated President. Morning prayer was offered by Rev Cyrus E Felton , Methodist minister of the Wesley Chapel. An afternoon funeral oration was delivered by Joe Stevenson of Chillicothe. The doors of the capitol were closed at 6:00 in the evening and the remains of President Lincoln were borne away to the depot of the Indiana Central Railway in Indianapolis.
