Written by Columbus playwright Chiquita Mullins Lee, Pierce to the Soul is a one-person play about the life of Columbus folk-artist Elijah Pierce, a prominent member of the African-American community for more than half a century. Pierce, a barber by trade, achieved international fame for his wood carvings when he was in his eighties. His works are part of the Columbus Museum of Art collections.

The Pierce to the Soul workshop is a great opportunity to learn more about this legendary folk artist, and to join in a public discussion with the playwright and creative team, helping to shape the evolution of this work-in-progress. The workshop begins with an introduction by dramaturge William Childs, followed by a reading of an excerpt of the play, performed by actor Alan Bomar Jones. After the performance playwright Chiquita Mullins Lee will talk about the research and playwriting process, and then open the floor for questions, comments and suggestions.

Pierce to the Soul will receive its world premiere at CATCO in April, 2010. Artistic Director Geoffrey Nelson will direct, with OSU History Professor William Childs serving as dramaturge.

Presentation of the Pierce workshops is made possible by a generous grant from the Ohio Humanities Council. These workshops build upon the three Pierce workshops held this past fall, made possible by a generous grant from GCAC, the Greater Columbus Arts Council.

Co-sponsored by CATCO Theatre.
Funding provided in part by The City of Columbus and the Franklin County Commissioners
and the Ohio Humanities Council
