Frank
Packard
His Influence & History in
Columbus

Metropolitan Library
96 S. Grant Street

Although many considered Frank
Packard (1866-1923) America’s foremost Institutional
Architect by the early twentieth century, his diverse body of
work (over 3400 buildings, with 100 in Columbus) ranged from
sweeping civic plans to picturesque residences.
His Beaux-Arts training allowed him to draw from historical
sources, not imitatively but thoughtfully, choosing certain
design vocabularies for certain building types. Whether
applying classicism for a public building and the grand
statement (Memorial Hall) or fusing Romanesque with the Pagoda
style (T&OC Railroad Depot), his architecture transcended style
through artful massing, attention to detail and use of
materials.
Barbara Powers, Head of Inventory and
Registration for the Ohio Historic Preservation Office will
illustrate how Packard helped shape his adopted home of Columbus
during the years it emerged as a booming Midwest capitol.
Dispatch columnist Joe Blundo, a keen observer
of the city’s built environment, will consider our collective
fascination with the significant surviving examples a century
later.
Funding provided in part by The City of Columbus and the
Franklin County Commissioners
and the Ohio Humanities Council.
