Columbus Historical Society 2019 Annual Meeting
Featuring Keynote Address by Dr. Ryan Keating, California State University San Bernardino
“Peace Among the Citrus Groves: Civil War Veterans and the Winning of the West”
The Columbus Historical Society will hold a brief annual meeting at 6:30, where we will share highlights from the past year and preview our goals for the future. Immediately following this official business, the public is invited to join CHS at 7 pm for Dr. Ryan Keating to give a talk about American Civil War veterans who moved from the Midwest, including Ohio, to California in the postwar years. Ultimately, more than four hundred former Union soldiers settled in San Bernardino County during the second half of the 19th and early 20th century where they built homes, grew businesses and families, died, and were buried. Though they all shared the common bound of westward migration, San Bernardino’s veterans had served in Civil War regiments organized in 29 different states or territories, and their war-time experiences varied greatly. So too did their post-war lives. Following the lives of veterans and their families who relocated to Southern California in the wake of the Civil War, this talk will focus on the important stories of the sacrifices, struggles, and successes of Union veterans and their families as they went to war, returned home, and navigated the post war environment. In their experiences we find the complex accounts of the lives of these men and the settling of the West in the years after America's bloodiest conflict.
This event is free, but registration is required.
